ON CAMPUS

• Store the NJIT Police emergency phone number (973-596-3111) in your cell phone and report any suspicious persons or activity immediately.

• Remember that the Department of Public Safety has an escort service available.

• Note the location of the numerous emergency phones spread across the campus.

• The Department of Public Safety is open and available 24/7 even on holidays and when the University is closed.

WHILE IN YOUR CAR

• Never leave GPS units, cell phones, or anything of value in plain view in your car.

• Drive cautiously. Traffic is heavier during the holiday season and far more people are injured in car accidents than are injured in crimes.

• Always lock your car even when it is parked in your own driveway. Never leave the motor running while your car is unattended.

WHILE SHOPPING

• Park in a well-lit and heavily traveled location.

• Carry small amounts of cash and only the credit cards you need.

• Avoid carrying a purse. If you have to carry a purse, carry it close to your body and closed.

• Leave the mall/store well before closing time. This provides greater assurance that you will not be alone in the parking lot. There is safety in numbers.

• Ask mall security to escort you to your car if you are leaving the mall after closing time.

AT HOME

• Use lamp timers in a variety of locations in your home.

• Turn on all exterior lighting. Lighting is the cheapest and most effective form of crime prevention.

• Make sure all of your exterior doors have a deadbolt lock with a 1 inch bolt throw and be sure to set the locks.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL

• Consider informing a friend or relative of your travel itinerary along with your expected time of arrival and then calling them to let them know you arrived safely at your destination.

IN GENERAL

• Call the police if someone’s actions make you feel uncomfortable.

• When out at night, try to have someone else accompany you.

• Make sure your cell phone is charged and carry it with you whenever you leave home.

• Using these basic precautions will go a long way in keeping you safe.
